I recently had the pleasure of interviewing my Music Business Developer Program Student & Client, Andrew, on how he successfully kept a 100% retention rate for his studio going into his next term!
Additionally, Andrew has gained five new students within the first few weeks of working with me, and was recently able to offer a scholarship to one of his most exceptional students.
Andrew is private music studio teacher, and joined the Music Business Developer Program in order to get more students, make more money, and gain the confidence to control his business!
Watch the interview above on how Andrew became a Music Business Developer and now crushes it at running his music studio!
Here's what we cover in the interview:
Here's the video transcription on how Andrew became a Music Business Developer and kept a 100% retention rate going into his next term:
Ben (00:00):
What's up everyone. I'm here with Andrew Miller from Andrew Miller's Music School. He recently joined the program about a few weeks ago, and he's been having awesome results and we're just here to share his success with you all. So say what's up, Andrew.
Andrew (00:17):
Hey, how's it Ben?
Ben (00:19):
I'm great. Great. Thank you for being on this call with me. I'm glad you're here. So we're just here to talk about your success. So tell me a little bit more about your business, your studio, and what you do, and, we'll maybe get into what your studio looked like before you joined the program.
Andrew (00:37):
Well, before I joined the program, I had a very good idea how to run my school with the in-person lessons. My students were happy. I had a nice student base, and then COVID-19 happened. And then the whole game changed. There was a lot of fear and uncertainty that my students were facing. I was worried because I didn't know how it was going to affect my business and then to make things even more scary, South Africa was facing as a very intensive lockdown to try and slow down the spread of the virus. And that made things really, really scary for me because I knew it was going to affect my business if I didn't do something.
Ben (01:21):
Yeah. So definitely, COVID definitely rock the world and definitely made it difficult for people to run their businesses. I mean, can you tell me a story of where you really felt the pain of the pandemic and really how it affected your business and what you thought of, how you felt and why you needed to kind of like make a change right away?
Andrew (01:43):
Well, what happened was I did make a plan with my students. I communicated with them every step of the way. I let them know we're going to go online, but I really started feeling the pain of COVID-19 when my students started pulling out, like I had eleven students, drop out of my school. Some just weren't prepared to carry on online because they felt it didn't work for them, others, they just left because they lost their jobs or they were on a cut pay. And then they were those that just felt no, it was too much of a mission for them to try and go online. So I really was feeling the pain then, and I realized I had to do something. I really didn't know what I could do at that stage.
Ben (02:36):
Man. All right. Well, let's carry on that journey. So like, how'd you find me and how'd you find the program?
Andrew (02:47):
Well, actually you found me surprisingly. You sent me a message on Facebook messenger reaching out to me, and we had our first meeting. You discussed about the Music Business Developer Program and, I joined it, I signed up for it. And, needless to say, I really enjoyed every single session that I've had with you so far, because you've really helped me identify them my strengths and improve them and also fix my weaknesses as well, too. And so this program is definitely be a huge help to me. It's given me the confidence that I needed to boost myself and my business. So I took the leap of faith and I started online marketing with my lessons. I started putting my lessons online and surprisingly I had new people sign up. And the best part was whether they were new people that have signed up with existing students both of them loved the online experience.
Ben (03:50):
That's awesome. I'm glad I was able to do that for you, Andrew. What's been your best experience with us so far and in the program?
Andrew (03:58):
Well, what I like about the program is that once I've paid the program, it's mine to use forever. And if there's something that I'm not too clear about, I can go back and review it again. And again, and again, if I want to, or if I need to go back a couple of weeks down the line, and I just want to check up on something, it's there, and I also love how you've made me part of the music community, community of music teachers that are determined to succeed, because that's really a driving force for me, especially when things are difficult or tiring. I know that there are other teachers who are going through similar struggles and they're also encouraging me to keep going.
Ben (04:46):
Thank you. Thank you. I'm glad that you are getting that out of the program. What I think people overlook is definitely that business is a lifelong process and we're not just in it just to make a bunch of money and leave, but it's a lifelong process and I'm here with my clients for life. And I'm here with you until, until you end your business or when you are ready to retire, something like that. So we're always looking for help, always looking for mentors out there, so I'm glad I'm able to do that for you.
Ben (05:21):
Yeah, I'm wondering Andrew, you've had a lot of success with this and with that success, it comes with very hard work and you're one of the hardest working clients that I have ever seen. So that's why you have these results, but, I know what you've accomplished, but tell them, tell everyone who's watching this. What's been the biggest results for you so far, maybe financially, maybe strategically in your business, or maybe even emotionally. What's been the biggest result for you?
Andrew (05:54):
Well, the biggest result for me is having all my students sign up for the next term. I did not expect such a massive turnover for the new term, with the online lessons. I was pretty certain there was going to be one or two that would fall by the way side. But the best part is that they've all signed up. And the fact that all of them have signed up as even given me the opportunity of giving one exceptional student who cannot afford lessons at the moment, the opportunity of carrying on with their lessons for free until his parents are in a position to pay me again for this. So that's been a huge, huge success and emotional lift for me for this term.
Ben (06:42):
That's amazing. That's amazing. I'm so glad to hear that. A lot of people might take that for granted and I see your business as a studio where you have students for life. And we talk about a whole bunch about creating an amazing experience for your studio. And I'm very confident to say that you are going to have students for life and that students are going to stick with you and that's gonna be that's, that's the golden ticket for your future right there. You're going to be able to grow so much and so fast by keeping students that I'm afraid to say that you're not going to be able to be able to catch up with this growth. Like it's not going to be easy, but you're definitely gonna do it because of your mindset that you have built through this program. So I'm glad that you've been able to do that.
Andrew (07:34):
No, thanks, Ben. I definitely think that this program is for any music teacher that is willing to put the work in. If they're willing to put the work in and willing to work hard and give back in the program as well too, they'll see the results. But like you repeat continuously throughout this program as well. This program is for winners, not strugglers. So if you struggle with running your business and you're just not willing to put any work for, then this program's not for you.
Ben (08:12):
Exactly. Thank you. Thank you for that, Andrew. It's definitely not about where you're at, but where you want to be. So the whole thing about winners and strugglers that Andrew just said, it's all about the mindset that you are at and you want to be at. So it's not whether or not you have 50 students, a hundred students or even five students. It's if you are willing to put in the work, if you're willing to learn, just like Andrew's done, and you're willing to get that result that you want. If you don't have that mindset, then this program is not for you. And you're not going to get the results that you want by being in this program. And I don't want to waste anyone's time. I don't want to waste anyone's money. And I'm here to help you get the results that you want. You have any last minute thoughts before we end this, Andrew?
Andrew (09:05):
Well, just all I can see Ben is that if teachers put this, more teachers put this program to good use, I can see a lot of music schools staying around for a very, very long time and building a very solid legacy that will carry on into the future. So keep putting this program out there so that more music students who want to start teaching can see this and even existing music school owners can see this as well too, because the stronger we are, the better we can face any challenge. We don't know what the next challenge after COVID-19 is going to be, so we need to have all the preparation that we can get.
Ben (09:54):
Exactly. Thank you. Okay, cool. So thank you so much for being here, Andrew. I really appreciate you taking your time out of your day for this.
Andrew (10:03):
No, thank you very much for having me again, Ben.
